THE OLD CAHAWBA PRAIRIE TRACT in Dallas County is a black-belt prairie site that includes a mix of grassland habitats and pine-plantation forest situated between drainages of the Cahaba River and Big Swamp Creek. This 3,007 acre acquisition provides for habitat restoration opportunities of rare prairie habitats, as well as several recreation opportunities. The tract also adjoins the historic grounds of Old Cahawba, Alabama’s first state capital site at the confluence of the Cahaba and Alabama rivers. In partnership with the Alabama Chapter of The Nature Conservancy, plantation timber is under a pre-existing 24 year lease arrangement with a third party.
